Sustainability

As the current custodians of an eco lodge built back in 2001 we have continued and enhanced the eco-sustainable practices started by the previous owner.

We respect that we and our guests have a responsibility to the environment without in anyway effecting the enjoyment of living or staying in this exceptional place.

To this end we maintain simple but effective practices...

• The lodge was designed and built as an eco lodge, all timber construction and is fully insulated.
• Circa  80% of the two hectare of our property  is native bush and during our time at the lodge we have planted over 500 native trees.
• 2 years ago we started our own orchard with apples, plums, citrus, pears, damsons, fejoa and figs.
• In the last year we have started a small herb and vegetable growing area.
• All of our water is gathered from our roofs and is filtered rain water.
• We recycle our waste – cans, bottles, bulk paper and cardboard are recycled, all kitchen food waste is fed to our neighbours pigs, or placed in our worm farm.
• We use eco products for our guest shampoo and shower gel, and for our cleaning materials.
• Long-term guests linen is changed every two days to conserve water and power or 3 days if they prefer, we also remind guests in each suite about conservation.
• We grow  fruit, herbs and vegetables and we also shop for fruit and vegetables at the  local farmers markets, choosing organically grown items where possible. 
• We use Earthcare bathroom tissues and compost shredded office paper waste.
• Where practicable we utilise low consumption light bulbs.
• We have a disposal procedure for all batteries and light bulbs.
• We have a policy of using local tradesmen and service providers from our unique village community.
• The local village has a landcare group and we frequently help with tree planting and other programmes in the community.
• We do not use air conditioning in any of the guest areas.

We are very aware of our responsibility to the environment and sustainability, hopefully in the coming years we will have the resource and potential through new technology to further expand our commitment.
